These products contain more calories than you might think

Losing weight can be quite a challenge, especially if you think you’re making healthy choices while some products are secretly sabotaging your diet. Here are five products that may seem healthier than they are, but can still get in the way of your weight loss.

1. Nuts

Although nuts are packed with healthy fats, fiber and protein, they are also high in calories. A handful of 25 grams quickly contains 164 calories, meaning half a bag of nuts can give you more than 600 calories. Although the Nutrition Center recommends a handful of nuts a day for good health, it’s important to keep an eye on portions if you want to lose weight.

2. Protein and granola bars

Protein and granola bars seem like the perfect on-the-go snack, full of fiber and protein. But don’t be fooled by the healthy claims on the packaging. Many of these bars, are high in calories and sugar. At nearly 238 calories and 16 grams of sugar per bar, they can have a big impact on your calorie intake. Always check the nutritional value before choosing a bar to see if it fits within your diet.

3. Dressing

A salad may seem like a light meal, but the dressing can quickly add a lot of calories. In particular, mayonnaise- or oil-based dressings, such as Caesar dressing, can contain between 100 and 180 calories per serving. Instead, opt for light dressings such as balsamic vinegar, which has only 35 calories per serving, or go for Remia Salata dressing natural with only 10 calories per serving.

4. Vegetable chips

Vegetable chips sound healthier than potato chips, but that is often not the case. They are often fried just like regular chips, which means they are also high in calories. For example, Albert Heijn home brand vegetable chips contain 472 calories per 100 grams, which is not far off from the 515 calories of potato chips. If you really want to lose weight, it’s better to choose fresh vegetables as a snack.

5. Baileys

Baileys may not be the first thing you think of when dieting, but the amount of calories in this drink may surprise you. With 314 calories per 100 ml, a small shot already accounts for more than 150 calories. If you do want a drink, choose options with fewer calories, such as champagne or a vodka spritz.
